La pieza se planteó como un acto de resistencia y develamiento, irrumpiendo en el paisaje cotidiano para cuestionar las expectativas históricas y culturales que colocan a las mujeres —y a ciertas corporalidades feminizadas— en el rol inevitable de cuidadoras.
El mensaje no busca negar la maternidad en sí, sino interpelar las formas en que hemos sido socializadas para maternar más allá de lo biológico: en los afectos, en el trabajo, en las amistades y en las familias. La intervención abre preguntas sobre a quiénes hemos sostenido emocional, económica y simbólicamente, y qué desgastes y silencios se esconden en esos cuidados naturalizados.
Con el tiempo, la pieza ha migrado a otros formatos, como playeras y carteles, expandiendo su circulación más allá del espacio urbano y permitiendo que la consigna continúe activándose en distintos contextos.
La obra propone imaginar otros modos de relación donde los cuidados se distribuyan de manera recíproca y justa. “No maternarás” se convierte así en una afirmación que interrumpe la inercia de estas cargas y señala la posibilidad de construir comunidades sostenidas desde el deseo, la igualdad y la corresponsabilidad.
NO MATERNARÁS was an urban intervention developed in collaboration with Dinamita Plataforma, activating public space through the statement “You shall not mother.” The first installation took place on May 10, 2024 — Mother’s Day in Mexico — reinforcing the symbolic and critical dimension of the gesture.
The piece emerged as a form of resistance and unveiling, disrupting the everyday landscape to question the historical and cultural expectations that position women —and feminized bodies— as inevitable caregivers.
Rather than rejecting motherhood itself, the message challenges the ways we are socialized to mother beyond the biological: in emotional labor, work, friendships, and family structures. The intervention raises questions about who we have sustained emotionally, economically, and symbolically, and what forms of exhaustion and silence lie beneath these normalized forms of care.
Over time, the piece has migrated into other formats such as t-shirts and posters, expanding its circulation beyond the original intervention and allowing the statement to continue activating new contexts.
The work invites the imagination of other relational models in which care is distributed more equitably and reciprocally. In this sense, “You shall not mother” becomes an affirmative interruption — one that opens space to envision communities grounded in desire, equality, and shared responsibility.
